Tengu USB Toy

Tengu USB Toy

The Tengu USB toy is a unique one of a kind USB toy that reacts to sound, that is to say that it is "activated" when its sensors detect sounds. The Tengu USB Toy does not make any sounds itself though. It is a totally silent and quiet toy. How this USB toy works is that when a Tengu USB powered character is plugged into a USB port and it detects some sounds, it will lip synch according to the sounds that are heard. (If you ask me I think the lip-synching is totally hogwash and that the Tengu is just "turned on" when it hears sound or music. The pixels on the Tengu do not differ according to different sounds.)

Take a look at this cute little Tengu Toy below. The specification of the Tengu usb powered character is as follows: 70mm high, 43mm wide and 14mm deep (the packaging is 168mm x 98mm x 34mm). Within the Tengu USB package there is also a 1m white USB cable to match up with the Tengu. According to the manufacturers, the tengu usb toy works with all types of computers - including those running on Windows, Mac or Linux. As long as the Tengu is connected to a USB port (or even a USB hub), being USB powered, the Tengu will be able to work.

If you are curious about the word "Tengu", perhaps I can shed some light here. The Tengu USB toy got its name from the Tengu, which is a Japanese term and which refers to supernatural creatures found in Japanese folklore. The Tengu are also known as the "heavenly dogs" or Tiangou, hence "Tengu". They are also well known yōkai or monster-spirits that are sometimes worshipped as revered spirits or gods. The Tengu is known to be mischevious and likes to plays tricks on people. Do not mix him up with the God of Mischief known as Loki, though there may be links between the two that we do not know!
Anyways the Tengu USB toy will not play any tricks on you, or worse give you a scare. If you want to see how the Tengu usb powered character works, you can do a search for "Tengu USB" on youtube. Like I said it does not create any sound, just that it lights up when detecting sound. By the way, the Tengu USB toy is produced by Mr Jones Design Ltd and was designed by Crispin Jones. Initially there were even some wooden usb Tengus too, but these have since sold out. If you are interested to get one, you can check out the links I created below the picture of the Tengu.
Something that might also be of interest to you is that the makers of the Tengu have also released Tengu All Stars, which are basically three usb Tengus with different hair styles (the original tengu is a boring, white and rectangular but these Tengus have hair added on the top). If you ask me I think buying these are a waste of money, so I would propose that you purchase a normal simple tengu usb toy, and then enhance it yourself! Create your own tengu hairstyle or whatever suits your fancy!
